Dimensions of Health

How do you feel when you wake up on your best day?

You probably feel excited to start the day. Your space is probably clean with your clothes and toys put away. You probably feel in control of your emotions. Maybe, you probably feel like your body is ready for the day.

This is what we work towards when we focus on our health. It doesn’t mean that you will always have your best day. It is okay not to be okay. This is why we practice healthy habits to help us with days when we don’t feel our best.

When you think about how you feel on your best day, notice that it is not just about how your body feels but how all of you feel. To be healthy, you must make sure that you are taking care of all of you! This means that you should pay attention to your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health. You can do this through wellness or taking time each day to practice habits that keep you healthy in all parts of your life.

To be physically healthy means that you are taking care of your body. We need to take care of our bodies so that we can avoid sickness and injury. There are many ways to take care of your body, like trying to exercise and eating foods that fuel your body.

To be emotionally healthy means that you are aware of how you feel. Being aware of our feelings and naming our emotions is important so that we can value them and talk about them with others. It is also important to let ourselves feel our emotions and learn to show them in a positive way. Can you imagine if every time you were angry you started a fight that ending up hurting you and your friend? That would not end very well, would it? This is why it is important to know how we are feeling and learn better ways to deal with our emotions.

  • Draw a picture to express your emotions
  • Talk to a loved one

To be spiritually healthy means that you take time to understand what is important to you. This might mean making time for reflection or making connections with something larger than yourself. These reflections and connections help us to find our place in the world. We can reflect through mindfulness activities, or we can grow our connections by learning about our culture or spending time in our communities.

  • Think about what is important to you
  • Try deep breathing (slowly breathe in, slowly breathe out)
  • Connect with nature

To be socially healthy means that you have family and friends that support you! This does not mean that you need a lot of friends but means that you have relationships where your friends and family support and listen to you. It makes us feel good when we have people to talk to about how we are feeling!

  • Play a game with a friend or your family
  • Talk to your friends/family over the phone or on zoom
  • Play with a pet

To be intellectually healthy means that you are taking care of your brain! Your brain loves to learn new things. It is important to take care of your brain by learning new things because every time you learn something new your brain gets stronger! The more you challenge your brain, the stronger it will be, and this is all a part of staying well!

  • Build with blocks
